Collective Leadership (Overview and Resources)
Overview
Strengthen Collective Leadership Capacity: James MacGregor Burns, often considered the father of the leadership development field and author of the seminal leadership book Leadership , was asked in a recent interview about the next frontier for the field of leadership. Without hesitation he answered, “We need to better understand leadership as a collective process.” There is a growing recognition that individual leaders need to be trained to work more effectively to unleash the collective leadership capacity of a group; and to better understand how diverse groups, especially those representing multiple organizations and stakeholders, identify shared purpose and vision and create capacity for coordinated action. Some programs have expressed concern that the selection and recognition of individuals may actually undermine the collective process and diminish the work of teams who share responsibility for achievements.

- Illuminating the Blind Spot: Leadership in the Context of Emerging Worlds. W. Brian Arthur, Jonathan Day, Joseph Jaworski, Michael Jung, Ikujiro Nonaka, C. Otto Scharmer, Peter M. What is the difference between collective leadership and other forms of leadership, such as shared leadership and collaborative leadership? An alternative approach to the question is, what leadership theories support and reinforce collective leadership? As an example, in their book on "Collaborative Leadership," Chrislip and Larson (1994) suggest that collaborative leadership shares several key ideas with other leadership theories and models, including: Burns' (1978) transforming leadership, Greenleaf's (1977) servant leadership, Kotter's (1990) leadership as process, and Kouzes and Posner's (1987) leadership practices.

On October 21st, Miho Kim and Celia Davis of the DataCenter led a session of the Bay Area LLC Circle on the model of Shared Leadership the center adopted. It was a great session, but not enough time for follow up questions. Therefore, we are providing this space for you to submit any questions about their model that you may have. I will be interviewing Celia the week of November 9th and will compile your questions as part of the interview. The interview will then be written up and posted for the entire community. Please submit any questions you may have here.
