Key Assumptions:
  1. Leadership programs that believe all of their participants have equal opportunities to succeed based on access to the same program benefits reinforce belief systems that help to perpetuate structural racism.
  2. Leadership is a relational and collective process in which making meaning of lived experiences and social identities lay the foundation for action around collective grievances and aspirations.
  3. If leadership is to play a role in creating racial equity, it is necessary for participants to understand how structural advantage and disadvantage works and is perpetuated, and to be explicit about racial equity objectives and desired results which can serve as a measure of progress.

Key Questions:
  1. Above are some key assumptions of the report. What do you think are the three or four most important key points that we want to drive home for maximum impact?
  2. Do people exercise leadership differently based on race/identity? This has been one of the more controversial points in focus groups and discussions with some feeling strongly that they are at a disadvantage because their leadership style is not recognized or rewarded by the dominant culture and others who resent the idea of being pigeon holed in any way.
  3. One person suggested that the above difference might reflect generational differences in how people feel about their race and ethnicity. What are these differences and should they be addressed?
  4. Are there lessons about how people are having productive conversations about race and identity? This is a major recommendation of the synthesis so it would be helpful to provide more tools and recommendations.
  5. Are there concrete benchmarks for the impact of leadership development strategies on racial equity?
  6. How can we develop a racial competency assessment tool for leadership development programs?
