Service and service learning experiences are already popular and growing more prominent every year. The recently passed Serve America Act promises to dramatically expand the number of young adults doing a full year of service; if all goes as planned, by 2017 there will be 250,000 Americans engaged in full-time citizen service each year. That's a lot of people! At that scale, service has the potential to be an important and significant pipeline for developing influential civic leaders of the future. How do we best develop leaders via service experiences? Any exploration of leadership for a new era should include discussion of this important question.
